Crackling
fierce
and starving flames
lick up the air around me.

Feel the heat
overwhelm
and begin to force inside me.

Oxygen is devoured
in the midst of frenzied tongues—
When I ask them what they want
They tell me:
‘You’re the one.’

Suffocating—
desperate for
the dregs of
consumed breath,
and all the while
anticipating
my own certain
death.

My flesh melts away
—wax from a candle
Exposing every part of me
More than I can handle.

Poisoned by smoke
I cough and choke
and stumble to my knees.
Desperation
Frailty
I need someone to save me.

He’s here!

With me…

In the fire.
